With more than 20 years of experience in supporting 25+ New Jersey school districts and area universities, we know how to help schools remain safe and protected.

Because every school’s scenario is unique, we provide an in-depth survey and analysis of your campus to help you determine which solutions will be most beneficial in protecting your faculty, staff, and students. Secuni is guided by the following four basic best practices for school security.

Upgrade your Access Control

Older types of access cards are increasingly vulnerable to being copied by bad actors. Newer technology and cards can keep your campuses much more secure, and also enable students to open doors with their phones.

Secure doors when they are supposed to be secured

Achieving this simple-sounding goal actually goes far beyond having reliable closers and latch hardware. Your security system should alert security staff if a door remains open for longer than normal, and that alert duration should vary from door to door. The notifications themselves should escalate depending on the staff response. That same security system should also show you video of the door, to guide the proper response. All of this is possible using modern integrated security system components.

Know who is going in and out

Video-enabled intercoms are a start. Your security system can track teachers and students as they swipe into the building and interior doors, and log each entry for later searches if needed. Video analytics can monitor unauthorized pedestrian activity in delineated areas, which is particularly useful at night. License plate recognition systems and database integration can notify you if an unwanted vehicle enters the property. Modern video surveillance systems have greatly simplified forensic searches, even allowing attribute-based lookups like “show me anyone wearing a yellow shirt on Tuesday morning.”

Build a system that is aware of differing conditions

By this, we mean lockdown drills, snow days, early dismissal, teacher conferences, and sports events. Your system should adapt to each one of these, automatically adjusting rules for access control, video, and notifications. Smart security software enables this to avoid common workarounds that commonly open gaps in your security plan.

Make your system work as a whole and be flexible

Certain vendors of proprietary software and hardware lock school districts into their systems, limiting upgrade paths and access to innovation. Your security system should instead be built on open-architecture principles, which saves money over time.
